Pinazo at the Museo de Bellas Artes de València
The Museo de Bellas Artes de València holds works by all three Pinazo artists. From Ignacio Pinazo Camarlench it holds 71 paintings and 143 drawings; from José Pinazo Martínez, 11 paintings and 7 drawings; the collection of Ignacio Pinazo Martínez comprises 22 sculptures and one drawing.
A significant part of the Pinazo Camarlench collection comes from two family donations. The first was made in 1935 by Ignacio Pinazo Martínez on his own behalf and on behalf of his brother José, comprising 29 paintings and 108 drawings. The second, consisting of 5 paintings and 16 drawings, was incorporated in 2021 as a condition of a prior donation, following the dissolution of the Círculo de Bellas Artes de València. The first donation reveals the sons’ wish to encompass the full range of their father’s painting — the orchard, the beach, portraits, everyday life in Godella, fireworks displays — interpreted primarily through representations of family members and the house in Godella. The second includes several portraits of members of the Círculo and two significant works: one of the most advanced versions of what is now the Parque del Molino de Godella, and a representation of the Palau de la Generalitat which, at the time of the donation, was about to become the seat of the Diputació de València, an institution that played a fundamental role in supporting the painter’s work.
Among the sculptural collection of Ignacio Pinazo Martínez, particular mention should be made of the two female figures he produced in the late 1940s, Mujer (Woman) and Enigma, the latter awarded a first medal at the National Fine Arts Exhibition of 1948; the portraits of his father, the plaster model for the monument located beside the Palace of Justice in València, and the portrait he donated to the Academia de San Carlos on the occasion of his admission in 1968, as well as two heads of popular types produced in the early twentieth century. Half of the collection comes from a donation by the artist in 1964.
