Museo Nacional del Prado

The Museo del Prado holds works by both Ignacio Pinazo Camarlench and José Pinazo Martínez. The collection of Ignacio Pinazo Camarlench comprises 26 paintings and 7 drawings. Seven paintings come from the donation of the Xavier Lafitte Collection in 1930 and 11 works were acquired by the State in 1957 for the Museo de Arte Moderno. The collection of José Pinazo Martínez comprises 6 paintings.

In the Pinazo Camarlench collection, particular prominence is given to the history painting Últimos momentos del Rey don Jaime I el Conquistador en el acto de entregar su espada a su hijo Pedro (Last Moments of King James I the Conqueror in the Act of Handing his Sword to his Son Pedro), which depicts the founding moment of the Kingdom of Valencia, as well as a significant group of childhood portraits culminating in that of his son Ignacio in Lección de memoria (Memory Lesson), a work that was awarded a first medal at the National Fine Arts Exhibition of 1899. The Prado also holds one of the painter’s most daring self-portraits, dated 1895, which should be contemplated alongside La fiesta (The Celebration) of 1890, two of the paintings that, according to the Museo del Prado, “best bear witness to the degree of modernity achieved by the artist in his full maturity, truly singular in the panorama of Spanish painting of his time.”

In the José Pinazo Martínez collection, Floreal (1915) stands out, awarded a first medal at the National Fine Arts Exhibition of 1915, along with two still lifes from 1928 and 1933, which reveal the stylistic and formal refinement that his painting underwent following the triumph of 1915.
